An easy way to minimize the risk of identity theft/fraud is by monitoring and reviewing your credit report. You may request a free credit report online at https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp by phone or through the mail. Each of the three credit-reporting organizations will provide you with a free report annually. If you stagger your requests every four months between each company you will be able to receive your credit report three times a year.

If you learn that you have been the victim of identity theft call the following three national credit-reporting organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and Social Security number. Equifax: 1-800-525-6285 Experian (formerly TRW): 1-888-397-3742 Trans Union: 1-800-680-7289 Also call the Social Security Administration (fraud line): 1-800-269-0271

If you would like to report a traffic violation directly to the CMPD you can do so at the TRAFFIC HOTLINE, Tel. number 704-432-2120 or by email at:bbryant@cmpd.org

The reporter must leave the North Carolina registration plate number (out of state registrations not accepted), description of the vehicle and driver if known, date, time, and location of the violation, and a detailed description of the violation.  Although the caller's identification will not be disclosed, the caller must leave his/her name and telephone number for verification purposes. This call generates a letter to the registered owner of the vehicle, indicating the concern and possible consequences of the driving behavior.
